Thanksgiving is undoubtedly America’s biggest food holiday. The origin of this feast stems back to the 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the religious refugees from England known popularly as the Pilgrims invited the local Native Americans to a harvest feast after a particularly successful growing season.
While much of the foods eaten on Thanksgiving today – turkey, stuffing, beans, and squash – were inspired by the original feast, a few Thanksgiving traditions were introduced only more recently. The first is football; much to mom and grandma’s chagrin, watching this game from the sofa has become a Thanksgiving staple for an estimated 70 million fans. Another new tradition is shopping; an estimated 135-million people will holiday shop this Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and over the Thanksgiving weekend. Wondering what’s the most recent entry to the must do Thanksgiving list? Social media of coarse!
Last year, Instagram set a usage record on Thanksgiving Day with more than 10 million photos accompanied by Thanksgiving-themed words in their captions shared. For several hours throughout the day, more than 200 photos about Thanksgiving were posted per second. This year, it’s likely this number will be even higher. According to Allrecipes 2015 Thanksgiving survey, ½ of Millennials and 1/3rd of all cooks plan to snap and share photos of Thanksgiving foods they prepare this year – proudly showcasing their success while providing inspiration for others.
We predict the top dish types shared with year will be turkeys and pies as Millennials rank these staples as their top Thanksgiving dishes to prepare and eat.
